the experience...

"After spending the past half a month in Sabah, we arrived safely at home on 10 April. It was a good experience indeed. An enriching experience that I would not forget so soon. Life changing? You bet!

I’m coming home...I have arrived home...and now I’m already missing 'home'...

We all have grown a sense of attachment to Sabah, or to be more precise, Kampung Kiau, a place where we have found a new home in an unknown environment. Living under the same roof for 15 days with total strangers is definitely going be a tall order. But as the days go by, those same strangers become your friends and slowly become your source of comfort and solace, and in the end we all became a family. We even called the two lecturers who went with us, Ms Fai’zah and Mr. Jonas Lee, ‘mummy’ and ‘daddy’. But they are definitely different from our real-life mum and dad. Ha-ha…

The sight. The smell. The noises. The people. The times spent... My Kampung Kiau....

Just the thought of the whole place makes me feel emotional about it. It’s a place that is well-placed close n deep in our hearts. A place which brings us endless memories, endless laughter, endless joy, endless sorrows... but yet, it’s just simply an ordinary place to begin with. Well, for some, it’s a special place that they hold dear. I really miss the place there, from the crowing chickens, the quarreling dogs, waking up to a beautiful scenery of the mountains, the close companionship of my fellow teammates, the regular trips down to the shops, the kids… everything! It daunted onto me, for that 15 days I was there, I never miss Singapore one bit! I was relishing my stay there.

One has to be amazed bout how big the impact those 15 days was on those 18 individuals who came down on 27 March. No one had expected much out of this trip. I can bet you everyone had the same thinking pre-trip: we are going to do community service by helping carrying rocks around. But what we took is more than what we give them. We have all brought home with us invaluable experiences and memories and that alone is probably worth more than what we are doing for the villagers there.

From painting murals on the newly built kindergarten to organizing a mini carnival for the kids and also trying to learn their culture dance, we definitely immersed ourselves in the sight, the sound and culture of Sabah. We all did a great job and in some ways brought joy and happiness to the local, especially the kids. It was heart-warmed feeling to see other smile and see the smiles in their faces. And oh don’t forget the countless of sleepless nights sneaking out quietly to watch the countless stars in the clear night sky. Heck, the end effect of everything is just priceless!

All the good things must come to an end...

That sense of attachment was so strong so much so, that I don’t want to leave the place ever! If I could, I would have sulked and threw tantrums on the last day, like a spoilt brat wanting candy, just to let me stay there. Reality sank down onto me and it was inevitable. We had to go. But we are not leaving empty handed. We leave with us all those wonderful yet precious memories of our stay there.

And the team would like to sincerely thank the four mass-communications students, May Lin, Yu Xin, Ashley and Claire for their tons of photo and video taking throughout the entire trip. It is thanks to you guys that not only we leave Sabah with beautiful memories, we also have the pictures and videos to accompany them with.

Thanks to the whole team for each of us has contributed to make a change in someone's life one way or another, be it to the people of Sabah or among ourselves. From the bonding camp all the way to the parting at airport, everyone has learnt something and benefited from this trip. And we can’t certainly learn all this from the small confines of the classroom.

We just can’t wait to come back to Sabah soon, to see how things have progressed and visit the place that we missed the most. Yay!!"
